Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude

Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude

Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude

We often look for external factors to explain our success—or lack of it. The economy, the market, the competition, the timing. While those things matter, there’s one factor that consistently rises above the rest:

Your attitude.

Your attitude shapes how you see opportunities, how you respond to challenges, and how others experience you. Two people can face the same situation—one sees a setback, the other sees a setup. One retreats, the other grows.

Over time, that difference compounds.

A Lesson Learned Over a Lifetime

In my five-decade career, I’ve come face to face with this principle time and time again.

There have been defining moments in my life—being homeless and living on the streets, going back to school and submitting to authority, getting married and learning to truly live with someone else, and building a business from the ground up.

None of these were easy.

Each one came with its own challenges. And in every situation, there was a choice to make—adopt a negative attitude or choose a positive, growth-focused one.

I’m not saying I got it right every time. But I do know this: whenever I chose to “turn lemons into lemonade,” it made the difference between moving forward and falling back.

In leadership, I’ve also learned that attitudes—good or bad—don’t just affect individuals. They influence teams, cultures, and ultimately results.

🚩 Danger Signs of a Bad Attitude

Attitude rarely shifts overnight—it slips gradually. Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

  • Blame over ownership

  • Chronic negativity

  • Resistance to feedback

  • Excuse-making

  • Low energy or lack of enthusiasm

  • Comparison instead of inspiration

Left unchecked, these patterns don’t just limit growth—they shape your future.

🧭 A Simple Attitude Check

Take a moment and be honest with yourself:

  • When things go wrong, do I look inward or outward first?

  • Do people feel energised after interacting with me—or drained?

  • How do I respond to correction: with humility or defensiveness?

  • Am I solution-focused or problem-focused?

  • Do I bring consistent energy, regardless of circumstances?

  • Am I growing… or just going through the motions?

Your answers will tell you more than any performance report.

🔑 The Good News

Attitude is a choice. And choices can change.

You can decide—today—to take ownership, stay positive, remain coachable, and bring energy into every room you walk into.

Because in the long run, your skills may open doors…

But your attitude determines how far you go.
